Unknown Warhol silkscreen offered by Col. Kirk's Auction Gallery

A previously unknown and never before offered silkscreen by Andy Warhol will headline Col. Kirk's Auction Gallery's September 2 sale in Pennsylvania.

Andy Warhol Nico Silkscreen print
The print is unsigned yet is on the woven paper that Warhol had specially made

The print, entitled Of Thee I Sing - Nico, is thought to be unique. It is being offered without reserve.

The piece is unsigned, but is printed on the same type of woven paper that was made especially for Warhol. The auction house states "authentication of such works has become impossible."

Depicting Nico, the nickname of Warhol's lifelong friend and model Christa Paffgen, the piece is said to have been purchased sometime in the late 1960s to early 1970s by a female patron of the arts, who was once part owner of the Wonder Bread and Archway Cookies companies.

The collector bought it from an unnamed gallery in New York City, and returned it to her home in Boston, where it has remained ever since.

The auction house believes that the piece was likely created for Christa Paffgen herself. Paffgen was an influential figure in New York in the 1960s, working for the likes of Vogue and Coco Chanel, as well as keeping a circle of illustrious friends.

The Velvet Underground famously collaborated with the model on their Warhol-produced debut album, The Velvet Underground and Nico.

At Christie's in 2012, a photobooth strip of Nico by Andy Warhol sold for $7,500.
