A beautiful antique tortoiseshell coffer auctioned in Portugal yesterday evening (February 5) for €30,000 ($40,619), making it the top lot in a sale that boasted a plethora of fine European art and antiques. The coffer sold within its €30,000-45,000 estimate, suggesting the market for rare decorative items remains strong.

The coffer boasts its original key – a suggestion of its designated function

Locking coffers were historically used to safely store money and valuables and can be found in a range of sizes and designs. This miniature coffer measures just 16.5 x 18.5 x 26.5 cm, suggesting it may have been designed to hold jewellery and precious keepsakes.

Believed to have been made in Europe during the 17th century, the coffer boasts intricate silver work and handles, as well as its original key.
