The Council of Three leads Bonhams art auction with 98% increase

The Council of Three, an 1888 oil on canvas by Albert Chevallier Tayler (1862-1925), sold for £118,850 ($188,247) at Bonhams' 19th Century Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours sale yesterday afternoon (January 23) in London.

The sale price represents a 98% increase on the painting's £60,000 high estimate.

Tayler was actively involved in the Newlyn school

Famed for his portraiture, Albert Chevallier Tayler is best known for his involvement with the Newlyn school of painting, which was based in Newlyn, Cornwall and inspired by the "en plein air" method made popular by the French impressionists.

Archibald Thorburn's (1860-1935) Cock and Hen Pheasant in a Woodland Clearing also sold with strong results, bringing £63,650 ($100,798) against a £50,000 top estimate.
