Gentileschi head woman

Sotheby’s annual Old Master Week sales will take place between January 25-27 in New York.

This year’s schedule is as jam-packed as ever, with Orazio Gentileschi’s Head of a Woman looking to be the star lot.

Gentileschi Head Woman

The value of Gentileschi's work has grown significantly in recent years

The work, valued at $2m-3m, is one of two known panel paintings by the artist and will lead an evening sale on January 25.

It dates to the early 1630s, while Gentileschi was working in the court of King Charles I of England.

It will follow on from the phenomenal $30.5m paid for his masterpiece Danae (1623) in January last year. That figure represents a huge advance in his price point. Prior to that, only one of his works had ever broken the $1m mark.

Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones’ The Madness of Sir Tristram will headline the January 25 Old Master Drawings sale on January 25 with an estimate of $350,000-450,000.

It’s a stunning realisation of a story from Arthurian legend executed in Burne-Jones’ pre-Raphaelite style.

January 26 will see a 15th century altarpiece, produced in Nottingham, UK, star in a day sale.

The lot is one of a series of altarpieces produced in the region that were exported throughout Europe.

It’s expected to sell for around $250,000-350,000.
