Signed Mattisse sketch from 1903 could bring £80,000 in France

An artist who reigned alongside Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp as one of the "big three" seminal artists of the 20th century will feature in Boisgirard et Associés' art auction on Sunday, August 8.

The artist in question is, of course, Henri Mattisse (1869-1954) whose sketch Le Repos Du Modele - or The Rest of The Model - from circa 1900-1903 will feature in the sale.

Signed by Matisse himself in the sketch's lower right corner, the work measures 21 x 32.4cm and will sell with an authenticating certificate from Wanda de Guebriant, dated March 25, 1993.

De Guebriant is registrar of Les Heriters des Matisse - The Heirs of Matisse - the Paris based Matisse foundation created by the legendary artist's daughter.

The work will auction with a pre-sale estimate of €50,000-80,000 when it goes under the hammer in the August sale, which will be held in Biarritz, France.
