William Hesketh Lever, the man behind Sunlight Soap, bought the 1867 work in 1917, and it resided for many years at the Lady Lever Gallery at his famed Port Sunlight factory in Merseyside, reports Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Rossetti's Proserpine will auction at Sotheby's London on November 19. The work, finished in 1880 and regarded by some as the defining image of the pre-Raphaelite art movement, has a £1.8m ($2.7m) high estimate.

The £2.2m ($2.9m) sale at Christie's in 2012 of The Salutation of Beatrice (1869) holds the auction record for a Rossetti work.
