A work by world-renowned American photographer Richard Avedon will feature at Christie's Spring Photographs sale which is set to take place on April 5 in New York.

The large, mint condition print, titled Charlene van Tighem, physical therapist, Augusta, Montana, 6-26-83, is expected to sell for $80,000-120,000.

The most valuable lot of the sale, however, is expected to be a photogram called Untitled, Schadographie Nr. 17, 1919 by acclaimed German artist Christian Schad. The piece is set to bring $200,000-300,000.

The photogram was previously owned by Tristan Tzara, the author of the 1918 Dada Manifesto, who dubbed Schad's photograms "Schadographs".

Only around 30 early Schadographs are known to exist, making this sale a rare opportunity for collectors.

The auction will also feature a collection of 71 lots which will be sold to fund acquisitions for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

The museum is offering the selection of prints after conducting a lengthy survey of its holdings with a view to acquiring new photographic works in the future.

Highlights of the collection will include Self Portrait with Wife and Models, Paris, 1981 by Helmut Newton, which carries a high estimate of $30,000, and Winter Sunrise, Sierra, Nevada, from Lone Pine, California, circa 1944 by Ansel Adams, which could bring $35,000.

The auction will feature plenty for both new and seasoned collectors, with estimates ranging from $1,000-300,000. The sale is expected to bring a total of $4.2m.
