An exceptional rhino horn libation cup, which has been carved to resemble an open magnolia blossom, is to sell online amidst a myriad of fine Asian art on December 11.

The unusual, claret coloured cup is believed to date back to the 17th century and carries a high estimate of $30,000 due its age, good condition, the rarity of any equivalent and the very high quality of the carving.

The cup is decorated with chilong dragons and flower petals as well as an intricate fretwork of lychee branches.

The traditional Chinese custom of imbuing plants and flowers with meaning extended to the decorative arts, in which flowers, fruits and trees might stand for various aspects of life. The magnolia blossom is thought to symbolise a beautiful woman, while the fretwork of lychee branches which adorn the sides of the cup are believed to represent good fortune.

A similar, larger rhino horn cup sold in June for $70,200. It also carried a $30,000 high estimate, which suggests the cup in question may sell for significantly more than its valuation.
