An illustration in ink by Reginald Marsh has sold for $34,000 in a sale of Prints & Drawings at Swann Auction Galleries in New York.

Titled White Tower Hamburger, Doyers Street, New York City, the work was formerly held in the collection of Barbara Adrian - his assistant during the early 1950s.

Reginald Marsh was a social realist painter and illustrator

Marsh (1898-1954) was a social realist painter in the vein of the Ashcan school. Like those painters, his work focused on aspects of working class life during the depression era and particularly the exploitation of women.

In 2011, his oil painting Merry Go Round sold for $302,500 at Christie's New York.

Shadow Dance by Marin Lewis (1881-1962) also sold well at the September 23 auction, achieving $34,000 against a $30,000 estimate.

An Australian-born illustrator, Lewis' chief claim to fame is that he taught Edward Hopper how to etch.

He's known as a talented illustrator in his own right, however, and regularly achieves strong results at auction.

The present lot features a striking New York street scene lit by the setting sun and is one of an edition of 109.

His auction record stands at $50,400, set for another print of Shadow Dance owned by his wife, Lucille Lewis.
