Pissarro's Le Jardin de Maubuisson was the top lot of Bonhams' November 5 Impressionist and Modern Art sale in New York.
The painting realised $1.8m.
Pissarro was the only artist to exhibit at all eight of the impressionist exhibitions held between 1874-1876 and was revered by his contemporaries - although he never enjoyed their level of popular acclaim.

In 2009 Guy Bennett, head of impressionist and modern art at Christie's New York, told Blouin ArtInfo, an online arts magazine: "Pissarro's market is incredibly undervalued.
"On the whole, the artist's price range at auction is between $1 million and $4 million, which is remarkable, considering where some of our other artists are selling and how influential Pissarro was. Our clients have realized that, and that's why you've seen this increase in his price point."
The record for a single painting by Pissarro remains $7m, set by Le Pont Boieldieu et la gare d'Orleans, Rouen, Soleil at Sotheby's New York in 2009.
Henri Le Sidaner's Les Jets d'eau Versaille sold for $653,000.

Sidaner (1862-1939) was a highly technical painter whose subtly melancholic work is driven by an emphasis on atmospheric light.
Earlier this year a Sidaner painting, discovered in a public school in Pittsburgh, sold for $750,000 at Sotheby's New York. It had been donated to the school in 1933.
