'Venice and Monet were made for each other'

The painting was completed in 1908 - the peak of Monet's career - during one of the first Venice Biennales. Estimated at £15m-20m ($22.5m-30.8m), the sale of Le Palais Contarini will coincide with the 2013 Biennale.

"Venice and Monet were made for each other. With its ravishing palette and modern aesthetic, this is a work of timeless appeal," commented Sotheby's Helena Newman.
