Meissen Augustus Rex vase at $190,000 in Delphinium sale

A rare Meissen vase bearing the Augustus Rex mark will sell as top lot in Bonhams' auction of the Delphinium Collection on March 20 in London.

Meissen Augustus Rex vase
The Augustus Rex mark was always applied by hand in underglaze blue, resulting in many variations that often confuse collectors

The yellow-ground vase, created circa 1730-1735, will sell with a £80,000-120,000 ($120,000-190,000) estimate. The Augustus Rex mark was introduced in the 18th century, and was reserved for objects produced for the court of Elector Augustus the Strong as founder of the Meissen factory, who later became King Augustus II of Poland.

The Delphinium Collection is a private British collection of 18th century Meissen porcelain that was formed over two generations following the second world war. Bonhams is establishing itself as a market leader for Meissen after offering the equally illustrious Marouf Collection in December 2012.
