Martin Kippenberger's Ohne Titel (Meine Lugen Sind Ehrlich) realised £2.3m ($3.7m) in a sale at Sotheby's London on October 17.
The painting is one of a series of unflattering self portraits executed during the 1980s and 1990s that show the artist either naked or clad in underpants.

Kippenberger (1953-1997) died aged 44, following years of hell raising. He was a playful, puckish figure in the art world - he bought a pizza restaurant in California in 1986 and hired the worst chef he could find because he missed the awful pizzas he used to eat in Germany.
On another occasion, he opened the Martin Bormann Gas Station in Brazil in reference to the influx of former Nazis into South America after the second world war.
Andy Warhol's Diamond Dust Shoes was another highlight, achieving £1.3m ($2.1m).
Warhol produced hundreds of illustrations of shoes during his time as a commercial artist in New York during the 1950s. In the 1980s, at the height of his career, he returned to the subject with a series of screen prints.
