Lygia Clark auction record broken at Phillips

Lygia Clark's Contra Revelo made $2.2m at Phillips' New York auction of Latin American art on May 23.

The impressive sale price represents a new auction record for the Brazilian artist's work at auction.

Clark Contra Revelo
Contra Revelo - Clark's most valuable work to date

The black and white work dates from 1959. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the estate of Lygia Clark.

Estimated to be worth $800,000, Contra Revelo sold with a 178.1% increase.

The value of Clark's work has been rising steadily following her death in 1988.

Clark's 1972 sculptural piece Gego sold for $411,200 at Sotheby's in November 2004 - her previous highest-selling artwork at auction.

Her creations are considered multi-sensory, transforming spectator into active participant.
