Three sketches believed to have been drawn by the eminent British painter Lucian Freud (1922-2011) while he was an art student in Essex auctioned in Colchester from the collection of fellow British artist Maggi Hambling on February 12-13.
The sketches brought a total of £16,300 ($25,289), with a drawing of a man sitting on a chair bringing the lion's share, selling for £8,300 ($12,883).

A sketch featuring a male torso and a drawing depicting two female nudes also brought £3,500 ($5,431) and £4,500 ($6,982), respectively.
Both Freud and Hambling attended the East Anglian School of Painting under art teacher Cedric Morris and, as Hambling informed local newspaper the East Anglian Daily Times: "Cedric gave [the sketches] to me in 1980 and I have enjoyed them for many years and I feel that now is a good time to let someone else have the pleasure of them."
Hambling is best known for her coastal sculptural works, including Scallop, which stands on Aldeburgh beach.
Works by Freud have previously proved popular with collectors. In October 2011 the artist's Boy's Head brought £3.2m ($5m) to Sotheby's London, while Black Eye - billed as the "most important self-depictions ever to appear at auction" - sold for $2.8m at Sotheby's in February 2010.
