Leon Commere's Moroccan Woman valued at $120,000

Leon Commere's Moroccan Woman will lead King's Auctions' 50 lot sale on September 28 in California with a $50,000-120,000 estimate.

The painting shows a woman in traditional Moroccan dress and exhibits the exotic and sexually charged atmosphere for which the artist is best known.

Work by Commere (1850-1916) traditionally performs well at auction. In 2006, The Serenade achieved $90,000 at DuMouchelles in Detroit.

Luo Guosong's Which is Earth? ink painting is another notable lot. The scroll dates to 1979 and is inspired by his lifelong obsession with the 1969 Moon landing.

Guosong is widely regarded as one of the foremost practitioners of contemporary Chinese art. As co-founder of the Taiwanese Fifth Moon Group he combined traditional ink painting and calligraphy with modernist influences such as abstract expressionism.

Lunar Landing sold for $202,155 at Sotheby's New York in 2008. His Midnight Sun painting is up for auction at Sotheby's Hong Kong on October 5 with a $207,000 high estimate.

Monolith, the Face of Half Dome by Ansel Adams carries an estimate of $13,000-18,000. Adams was one of America's most revered photographers, famous for his spectacular shots of national parks.

A number of photographs by Adams, including Moon and Half Dome from his Yosemite series, are up for auction at Bonhams in New York on October 29 with estimates of $20,000-30,000.

His record price at auction remains $609,600 for Moonrise, Hernandez New Mexico at Sotheby's New York in 2006.
