Lauren Bacall's art, jewellery to be offered by Bonhams at $3m

The stunning art and jewellery collection of actress Lauren Bacall has been consigned to Bonhams following her death in August.

Bacall was a star of both stage and screen, accompanying husband Humphrey Bogart in many films

Bonhams has been charged with selling the estate, which is valued at $3m, in New York in March 2015.

The undoubted highlights of the collection are Bacall's eight sculptures by Britain's greatest 20th century sculptor, Henry Moore, with two of these featuring in the November Impressionist and Modern Art sale at Bonhams.

Moore deliberately used recurring themes in his work so that he could concentrate on form rather than meaning

The actress remembered her first conversation with Moore, shortly after which she visited him in his studio in Hertfordshire, describing it as a high point in her life. "The operator said Henry Moore was on the phone. I could not believe it. I said, 'Is that really Henry Moore?' and he said, 'Is that really Lauren Bacall?'''

Maquette for Mother and Child is a familiar work from Moore, employing a subject he revisited frequently. It is valued at $150,000-200,000 in the November 4 sale, while Working Model for Reclining is valued at $600,000-800,000.

The March 2015 auction will feature the remaining 700 lots of Bacall's collection, many of which were once housed in her LA residence with first husband, Humphrey Bogart, as well as her final residence, the famous Dakota building in New York, which overlooks Central Park and was shared with her second husband, stage actor Jason Robards.

Bacall's art includes prints from Hockney, ceramics from Picasso and works by Alexander Calder, Joan Miro and Max Ernst, as well as further sculptures by Moore, Lynne Chadwick and Robert Graham.

Her jewellery is led by a series of pieces from French designer Jean Schlumberger, who is best known for his work with Tiffany. A gold and blue enamel bracelet holds the top estimate at $20,000-30,000.

Pieces from Bacall's collection have previously come to auction, with an Alexander Calder mobile valued at $600,000 appearing at Bonhams in 2011.
