The growing popularity of Persian rugs was demonstrated at Bonhams' Period Design auction yesterday (February 12), where three attractive examples dominated the top sales. The rugs, all of which originate from the Kashan area, sold for £9,375 ($14,601), £7,750 ($12,086) and £6,875 ($10,707).

However, the top lot overall was a pair of George III mahogany chests, which sold for £15,000 ($23,359).
Kashan, now part of northern Iran, was famed for its rug production during the 17th and 18th centuries. However, it is believed that production all but ceased in the region until a resurgence in the 20th century, due to renewed Western interest.
