Julia Margaret Cameron portrait beats estimate by 41%

Julia Margaret Cameron's Portrait of Kate Keown was the star lot of Swann Auction Galleries' October 25 photography sale.

The print is one of a series of 12 "life-sized head" portraits of Keown, taken with Cameron's new large format camera.

It sold for $106,250, an increase of 41.6% on its $75,000 estimate.

Cameron (1815-1879) was a trailblazing Victorian photographer who took up the medium in 1864, at the age of 48.

She proceeded to revolutionise the form with her intimate, soft focus portraits - although (as is often the case) her work wasn't fully appreciated in her own lifetime.

Kate Keown was Cameron's niece and a regular subject in her work.

Another print from the series of 12 sold for $461,000 in a charity auction at Sotheby's in 2014.

A collection of 15 photographs by the legendary portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) made $87,500, up 45.8% on a valuation of $60,000.

It includes his iconic portraits of Winston Churchill, Muhammad Ali and Pablo Picasso.

Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian photographer who established himself as the go-to Canadian portrait artist for visiting dignitaries and celebrities.

It was his definitive portrait of Winston Churchill, taken in 1941, that propelled him into the limelight.

We have an autographed copy of Yousuf Karsh's 50 Year Retrospective for sale.
