The last sculpture ever made of JFK from a live sitting is to appear in a sale of Fine Books and Manuscripts at Bonhams.
The plaster maquette was designed by sculptor Felix De Weldon for a bronze bust of the president.
Weldon was still working on the piece when Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963.
Kennedy sat twice for Felix De Weldon in 1963
In his memoir he recounts a visit Jacqueline Kennedy made to his studio in the weeks after the killing: “After the President was assassinated, Mrs. Kennedy came to my studio to supervise the completion of the bust.
“When she saw the finished work for the first time, she burst into tears. This was a very sad day.
“I remember Mrs. Kennedy wearing white gloves, walking slowly towards the clay model, touching the corners of the lips making the image a happier John F. Kennedy."
Jacqueline was clearly moved by the experience.
She later wrote to Weldon: "I do want to tell you how pleased I am with your bust of the President, and when it is placed in the Library, I know it will serve as a constant reminder of the President and all he means to our country.
“The likeness is really quite remarkable and I do appreciate your letting me work with you during the final stages of its completion."
The piece is offered with a valuation of $150,000-200,000 ahead of the March 9 sale in New York.
We have this touching photograph signed by JFK and his family for sale.
