James Edward Buttersworth painting to sell for $300,000

A painting by James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894) is to lead a sale of maritime art at Bonhams on January 24 with a $200,000-300,000 estimate.

The painting shows the record-breaking clipper Flying Cloud

Titled The American clipper ship Flying Cloud, Scudding in a Gale of Wind off Cape Horn (1854), the work depicts the eponymous vessel on its record breaking voyage between New York and San Francisco - a journey it made in just 89 days and eight hours.
