Good enough to bury in the back yard: Our top five Canine collectibles

Jet, a flatcoated retriever was named Best in Show at Crufts in Birmingham last night. The Edinburgh-based nine-year-old took the top prize from Reserve Best Jilly, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, in the 120^th running of the prestigious event.

Every one of the 21,000 beasts who entered the event is a prized possession. Here we look at our top five canine collectibles that can be enjoyed by dog lovers and collectors alike without getting hair on the sofa.

A reluctant muse. Kleberg by Jamie Wyeth made $218,000 in early 2011

Earlier this year a 1984 Jamie Wyeth portrait of his wife's dog Kleberg made $218,000 at a Christie's auction in New York, more than five times its estimate. The unimpressed looking Labrador is depicted with a black circle around its left eye.

Charles Dickens' dog collar

In 2010 a collar worn by one of Charles Dickens' dogs, inscribed with the author's name and address, sold for $11,590 at a Bonhams New York event. Its wearer is unknown although the size of the collar suggests an animal of larger than average stature.

Edward Lear's tiny dog portrait

A letter written by nonsense poet Edward Lear containing a tiny portrait of the recipient's dog is set to go to auction at Bonhams later this month. It has a top end estimate of £3,000.

Pointer and Setter on point by Edmund H Osthaus

Pointer and Setter on point, an artwork by American Edmund H Osthaus, sold for $36,600 earlier this year at Bonhams in New York. Osthaus, who was active around the turn of the last century, is one of the most loved canine colourists.

Tiffany & Co silver presentation bowl made in sterling silver by Tiffany & Co

A 1979 Westminster Kennel Club silver presentation bowl made in sterling silver by Tiffany & Co sold for $6,222 in February 2011. The bowl is engraved with 'Westminster Kennel Club' over a finely engraved Pointer, under which 'Sensation Best in Show 1979' has been inscribed.
