Giacomo 'Liege' Legi art The Merchant Of Volaille auctions in Versailles

An authentic 15th century painting by Giacomo Legi (1600-1640), otherwise known as Liège, auctioned in Versailles, France, earlier this week (March 4).

Entitled The Merchant Of Volaille, the work measures 192 x 300 cm and brought €27,626, nicely above its €25,000 top estimate.

Liège was, above all, an author of still lifes as demonstrated by this work. He learned from the Genoese Baroque painter Domenico Fiasella.

The artist died in 1640 after falling ill and going for treatment in Milan. Liège was just 40-years-old.

Small restorations have been made to The Merchant Of Volaille over the years, including the filling of small gaps and a re-screening. The artwork sold without a frame.

The artwork's impressive provenance includes having previously been stored at the Museum of Art and History in Geneva, Switzerland.
