A Bonhams sale of French decorative arts celebrating the art nouveau and art deco periods saw collectors head to the Grand Palais Paris yesterday (February 7) - just as they did over a century ago.

The historic building was home to the Exposition Universelle in 1900, which drew millions of visitors and showcased the art nouveau style which came to dominate European design.
The auction offered work by iconic names including Rene Lalique and Emile Galle, but bidding saw the best results go to French designer Alfred Porteneuve (1896-1949) and the sculptor Francois-Raoul Larche (1860-1912).
An Amboyna cabinet designed by Porteneuve, circa 1930, sold for €35,000 ($46,946), a result bettered only by a Larche-designed bronze figural lamp depicting the famous dancer Loie Fuller, which sold for €36,250 ($48,617).
