Paris Theatre (1940), a painting by Everett Shinn, was the top lot of Skinner's American and European Works of Art auction on February 7 in Boston.
It achieved $231,000, an increase of 229.9% on an estimate of $70,000.

Shinn (1876-1953) was an early member of the Ashcan school, the realist collective based in New York that included Robert Henri and George Bellows.
He is best known for his depictions of the theatre and his love of the high life - a focus that put him at odds with other members of the collective, many of whom were committed socialists.
The record for his work at auction is $7.4m, set for Stage Scene at Sotheby's New York in 2004.
A watercolour by Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), titled Young Love: Walking to School (1949), made $183,000, up 161.4% on a valuation of $70,000.

The painting was produced for the Four Seasons calendar by Brown & Bigelow, a company with whom he had a longstanding working relationship.
Rockwell's price point appears to have advanced significantly in recent months, with his work consistently outperforming its estimates.
In December 2013, Rockwell's iconic Saying Grace set a new auction record for the artist when it achieved $46m at Sotheby's New York - an increase of 130% on its $20m valuation.
