Parting of Coriolanus from his Wife, the last work exhibited by Etienne Aubry before his death, has set a new world record for the artist at an auction in Paris, France.
The painting sold for €148,704 ($198,690) on March 23, beating its high estimate by 23.9%.
The Versailles-born painter (1745-1781) exhibited the work at the Salon of 1781 in Paris, just months before his death.
Between 1748-1890 the Salon was the greatest annual or biannual art event in the Western world.
The piece has had some restoration work over the years, and is housed within a gilt wood frame.
It has been held in some noted collections, including that of Jacques Augustin Silvestre (1719-1809).

The sale also featured a French record for a work by Italian painter Agnolo Gaddi, whose Vierge d'Humilité entourée d'anges, produced circa 1390, achieved €1.02m ($1.36m).
The global art market grew by 7% to $66bn in 2011, according to a report commissioned by the TEFAF Maastricht art fair, with the volume of transactions increasing by 5%.
