Elizabeth Catlett's Standing Figure valued at $200,000

Elizabeth Catlett's Standing Figure is the top lot of Swann Auction Galleries' sale of African American Art in New York on June 10 with an estimate of $150,000-200,000.

The lot consists of a female form carved in wood and black enamel.

Catlett (1915-2012) was an artist who worked predominantly in the medium of sculpture and is best known for her works that focus on the experience of black people in America.

Elizabeth Catlett Standing
Elizabeth Catlett created Standing Figure in 1986

Her most fertile creative period was during the 1960s and 1970s, when she created a series of works memorialising some of the greatest black Americans - including a sculpture of Louis Armstrong which stands in a New Orleans park and a mural to author Ralph Ellison in New York.

Her auction record was set at Swann last year, when her Homage to My Young Black Sisters sold for $288,000.

Sergio, a painting by Barkley L Hendricks, could make $80,000-120,000.

Hendricks creates life-size, realist portraits of (predominantly) black Americans that explore style in urban communities. His artworks feature extensively in some of the biggest museums in the US, including the National Gallery of Art and the Brooklyn Museum.

In February last year, Hendricks' The Hawk, Blah, Blah, Blah (1970) sold for $132,000 at Swann.
