Edward Jean Steichen's Autumnal Afternoon - The Poplars, Voulangis (1909) made an increase of 222% on its estimate at Doyle, New York on November 5.
The painting sold for $161,000 against a $30,000-50,000 estimate at the European, American, Modern, Contemporary & Street Art sale.

American Steichen (1879-1973) was both a significant painter and photographer.
He worked for Conde Nast in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming one of the world's highest paid photographers, and later went on to become director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The record for his work is $2.9m for his The Pond - Moonlight, which holds the distinction of being the fifth most valuable photograph ever sold.
