A silver brandywine bowl produced in 1690 made $317,000 at Christie's New York on January 23, achieving an increase of 26.8% on a $250,000 estimate.

Cornelius Vander Burch, a Dutch emigre, made the distinctive item in New York. Just 23 examples of the six-panelled serving bowls are known to exist.

Burch was an early Dutch-American silversmith

They were used to serve a mix of brandy and raisins, which was traditionally consumed at ceremonial events in the Netherlands - a custom brought to the new land by the early settlers.
