Christie's inaugural Mumbai auction, the first in India, set for December

Christie's has announced that it will hold its first ever sale in India, with the auction set for Mumbai in December.

In the process Christie's becomes the first international auction house to hold a sale in the country.

The auction house has long been keen to capitalise on the country's burgeoning art scene and has had an office in Mumbai for two decades.

Christie's states that "the decision to hold [an] auction at this time is a reflection of the strong momentum in the domestic art marketplace."

The auction house added that the auction reflects "the increased international appeal of Indian art and the growing participation of Indian collectors across international sale categories."

The first auction will be comprised of domestic artworks, with other, more varied sales to follow.

Christie's has also announced that it will become the first international auction house to operate independently in China, with an auction expected to take place in September 2013.
