Charles Remington record doubles at Christie’s

Western artist Charles Remington’s cast of his iconic sculpture Coming through the Rye (1905) sold for a record $11.2m at Christie’s last week.

Remington Coming Rye

The sculpture is one of Remington's most celebrated

That’s double his previous auction record, set at $5.6m in 2008.

The sculpture, one of eight completed editions, is among his most complex pieces.

Remington started work on it in 1902 and finished in 1908, when he smashed the wax cast to bits in frustration.

Afterwards he wrote in his journal: “They got it away from me. I could no longer make it satisfy me.”
