Charles Hossein Zenderoudi's SAT + HE + SAT to auction

Charles Hossein Zenderoudi's SAT + HE + SAT is among the highlights of Bonhams' April 20 sale of Iraqi and Middle Eastern art in London.

The piece, which is valued at £80,000-120,000 ($119,008-178,512), was executed in 1973.

Iraq Bonhams Zenderoudi
Zenderoudi is a pioneering Iranian calligrapher

Zenderoudi is one of Iran's most celebrated painters. His pioneering work takes its inspiration from traditional calligraphy.

Bonhams explains: "Works from the present series, composed in the early 1970's, mark a shift towards a more compositionally terse, technical and measured approach to calligraphy…

"Almost rhythmic in its grace, balance and composition, the present work is one of the finest examples of Zenderoudi's work from this period."

Mohammad Ehsai's Yaquin Al Saqi carries an identical estimate of £80,000-120,000 ($119,008-178,512).

Like Zenderoudi, Ehsai is a calligrapher who pushes the boundaries of his ancient artform. His technical skill lies in his manipulation of the basic building blocks of language, as opposed to adorning it with unnecessary frills.

Bonhams comments: "A master of his craft, Ehsai's bold, striking work is the modern standard-bearer for an artistic tradition spanning over one thousand years."
