Alexander Calder Works on Paper Sothebys
Calder is best known as a sculptor and creator of the mobile, but achieved acclaim over a range of mediums

With the auction house celebrating Calder's "inimitable playfulness, wit and grace" as one of the leading artists of the 20th century, the exhibition features acclaimed works on paper created between 1930 and 1976, the year of Calder's death.

According to Sotheby's, "Calder's gouaches often tell a story and the present collection amasses a lifetime of narrative for the surrealist artist".

Among the many highlights will be Composition and Untitled (Plates 1 and 2), which were both painted as possible designs for the summer 1946 edition of Style En France magazine.

American Calder (1898-1976) is best known as a sculptor, creating striking pieces that are now placed in illustrious destinations around the world. However, he achieved success across a number of mediums, including the creation of the mobile.

The current auction record for Calder was set at $18.5m by a standing mobile entitled Lily of Force at Christie's in 2012.

In May 2012, Calder's sculpture Red Bull made an impressive 32.5% increase on its $400,000 high estimate to sell for $530,500 in his home state of Pennsylvania.
