Bowie art sales led by Odd Nerdrum's Dawn

Odd Nerdrum's Dawn (1990) led the second part of the auction of David Bowie's art collection at Sotheby's in London on November 11.

It's one of the artist's most recognisable paintings and made £341,000 ($535,472), an increase of 326.2% on a valuation of £80,000 ($125,624).

Odd Nerdrum describes his own work as kitsch

That's a new record for Nerdrum's work at auction.

Nerdrum describes his style as kitsch, and positions himself in direct opposition to the prevailing tide of modernism.

He paints in the style of the old masters, although his subject matter is usually surreal, eerie and unsettling.

Erich Heckel's Mannerbildness, a key work of the German expressionist movement, realised £257,000 ($323,049) against an estimate of £50,000 ($62,850) - up 413.9%.

This auction followed on from an evening sale of Bowie's collection on November 10, which saw Jean-Michel Basquiat's Air Power sell for £7m ($8.8m).

The third and final part of the Bowie auction (also held on November 11) featured a selection of design pieces by members of Italy's renowned Memphis Group.

The star lot was a radio-phonograph by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

The piece resonated well with bidders.

It sold for a world record £257,000 ($323,049), smashing its £1,200 ($1,508) estimate by a dizzying 21,316%.

Practically all the lots in each part of the sale sold for significantly higher than estimate, indicating that collectors were prepared to pay well above market value for a piece of Bowie's personal collection.
