Bonhams Japanese art auction showcases superb Meiji works

Bonhams has announced that its Fine Japanese Works of Art auction, which will be held on March 19 in New York, will be led by a fine selection of Meiji period (late 19th century) works.

The Meiji period saw the 'rise of cultural exchange between East and West', according to Bonhams, resulting in a distinctive style. This cloisonne vase is estimated at $15,000-18,000

The top lot of the auction is a massive bronze incense burner by Suzuki Masayoshi, which was intended to "capture the imagination of the newly emerging Western market". It will sell for $35,000-45,000.

Building on the success of woodblock prints at Bonhams, following a November 2012 that saw a Toshusai Sharaku print sell for $117,500, the current sale will offer an outstanding selection of traditional works, highlighted by a Katsushika Hokusai print at $3,500.
