Traylor (1853-1949) was a former slave who became a sharecropper following emancipation. In his late 80s he took up illustration after a move to Montgomery, Alabama.
In 1939 his work came to the attention of the art world and by the 1940s was being shown in galleries across America.
The record for his work at auction is $203,750, set for Man with a Yoke at Sotheby's in 2001.
We have a signed photograph from another celebrated folk artist, Grandma Moses, for sale.
