Pierre Berge & Associes announced that the anonymous bidder paid over $1.1m for the works.

Among the highest valued fragments, which weigh several dozen kilos each, was a piece by Russian artist Erik Bulatov, which was valued at $185,602.

In May, a 4-tonne section of the historic wall sold for $23,500 in the US in order to pay back victims of a Ponzi scheme.

The remaining sections of the wall have come under threat recently, as local authorities have decided to demolish them as part of a large gentrification scheme.
