The mural is believed to have been sold for more than £750,000 ($1.1m), despite protests over its sale, according to Bloomberg. Local residents believe the mural should not have been removed, instead left for the public to enjoy.
The mural first appeared in May 2012, painted on the side of a local Poundland store. It then disappeared, before turning up in a Miami art auction valued at $500,000-700,000.
However, the Miami sale was cancelled at the request of London authorities, who were powerless to stop this weekend's auction despite their best efforts.
The identity of the buyer is unknown.
