Andy Warhol Studio 54 auction offers exclusive items online

Christie's online auction will celebrate Andy Warhol's legacy at the exclusive Studio 54 nightclub, with bidding taking place from April 26 to May 3.

The announcement follows the success of the first Warhol online sale at Christie's, which more than doubled its pre-sale estimate. The current sale will focus solely on Warhol's Studio 54 work, with more than 215 paintings, drawings, photographs and prints offered relating to the nightclub.

Estimates range from $1,500 to $70,000, with items for collectors of all levels.

"If the 1970s was a decade of heedless optimism, then Studio 54 was its glittering epicentre. During its reign as New York's number one hot spot to see and be seen, it was the place where paparazzi mingled with celebrity, where highbrow danced with low-brow, where pop art and fine art talked into the wee hours of the morning," recalled journalist Anthony Haden-Guest.

Warhol was part of the inner circle of Studio 54 and was close friends with one of the founding owners, Steve Rubell, who featured on the cover of the artist's Interview magazine in February 1979.

Palm Beach Modern Auctions recently sold Rubell's own archive of Studio 54 memorabilia in a landmark sale that was topped by a sculpture Warhol made especially for the club.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a black polo neck jumper worn by Andy Warhol as part of his inimitable look. A fantastic piece, this is a rare intimate collectible from the world's most valuable and talked about artist.
