The exhibition traces the historical development of iconic Buddhist art and its profound effect on Asian culture.
Included are the "finest pan-Asian Buddhist sculptures" and artworks from the ancient kingdom of Gandhara, now in Pakistan.
Artworks from Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia, China and Japan are also included, with contemporary works from Cai Xiaosong and Gonkar Gyatso.
The Bodhisattva statue originates from Gandhara, during the Kushan period (2nd/3rd Century). Standing 57 inches tall, it is wonderfully carved from grey schist, a popular material in carvings from Gandhara.
Sotheby's will also hold its Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art auction in September, with a gilt bronze statue of a Bodhisattva among the many highlights.
