Waterman Three Snakes pen up 2.2% pa at San Francisco sale

A Three Snakes sterling silver fountain pen by Waterman that realised $37,500 led Bonhams' sale of Fine Writing Instruments in San Francisco.

The pen, which features three entwined snakes with emerald eyes, is believed to be one of the earliest examples of a Waterman snake pen - and quite possibly the only example in existence featuring three snakes.

It was made in New York circa 1888-1898 and previously sold at Bonhams London in 1998 for £17,000 ($27,000) - equating to an annual return of 2.2% pa.

A set of three Conway Stewart 18k gold fountain pens made $28,750.
