Nathaniel Plimer miniature portrait set to realise $66,500 in Sydney

A miniature portrait of Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas MakDougall Brisbane by Nathaniel Plimer could realise $47,500-66,500 at Bonhams in Sydney on November 25.

It will highlight the three day Australian, European & Asian Decorative Arts sale, which will include a collection of colonial artefacts.

Nathaniel Plimer (1757-1822) was a significant English miniaturist, and studied under Richard Cosway - a regency era painter.

He exhibited at the Royal academy between 1787 and 1815.

Sir Thomas Brisbane was the governor of New South Wales between 1821 and 1825, and played a significant role in setting up infrastructure and agriculture within the fledgling colony.

The city of Brisbane in Queensland was named after him.

A John Mcdouall Stuart explorer's pocket watch, created circa 1859 by James Brock, is valued at $38,000-57,000.

The most fearless of all Australia's early explorers, John Mcdouall Stuart was the first man to travel across the Australian mainland from North to South and return - a feat he achieved in 1861 after six attempts.

The watch was awarded to Stuart by the Royal Geographic Society in 1859, in recognition of his accomplishments on his first expedition in 1858 where he discovered Chambers Creek - a rare source of water in the outback that became a staging post for subsequent expeditions into the interior.
