Stamp collectors have the opportunity to own one of the rarest St Christopher stamps in existence on January 23.
The used 1888 (May) "one/penny" on 2½d ultramarine is lightly cancelled and declared by auctioneer Spink to be in “fine” condition. Its original value remains unobliterated.
The stamp's crisp perforations boost its value
St Christopher is an alternative name for the Caribbean island of St Kitts.
The £9,000 ($13,372) estimated stamp has a catalogue value of £14,000 ($19,244).
Is the highlight of the Brian Brookes Collection of St. Kitts-Nevis auctioning at Spink in London on January 23.
The collection also features a selection of early letters, including an entire 1669 example from Amsterdam to St Christopher. A run of St Kitts’ complete history of handstamps is also on offer, in addition to what Spink is calling “undoubtedly the largest holding of World War 2 Censor covers”.
“This magnificent collection, formed over forty years, is about as replete as one could get,” explains the auctioneer.
