Two Russian coin lots fetch over $281k

A H Baldwin & Sons have completed their January sale of rare coins of the world.

The highlights of the strong sale, which achieved $4,815,136, were numismatic pieces from Russia, showing that this is a growing area in the field of collectible coins.

A 1707 Shestak Half Tymf, proved to be one of the most fascinating pieces to the audience. This coin was first recorded in 1897 in 'Матерiалы по Русской Нумизматикъ' where it was the only example available of this very rare coin and soon became the plate coin in all standard references.

Estimated from the start at $50,000, bidders believed it to be even more valuable and pressed it all the way up to $97,750.

This was not the top lot, however, which was a complete set of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky, accompanied by a letter written by his Highness, the Duke Elimar of Oldenburg.

Estimated at $75,000, the set provoked enormous excitement amongst bidders who quickly doubled the guide price and looked at one stage as if it might triple it. The lot finally sold for $184,000.

Numismatists who regret missing this sale will be glad to know that there is a range of rare coins on offer right now.
