Shaker pine schoolhouse cupboard expected to auction for $80,000

A Shaker pine schoolhouse cupboard built in Mount Lebanon, New York in around 1840 is to lead a sale of furniture produced by members of the US branch of the sect.

The auction will take place at Skinner in Boston on June 15.

The cupboard is considered a prime example of Shaker furniture

The lot, which is valued at $60,000-80,000, is thought to have been built for a local school and displays the minimalist flair that characterises the best examples of Shaker furniture.

Scholar John Kassay wrote in his 1980 study: "The arrangement of the graduated drawers and panelled doors on this exceptionally tall cupboard-chest is harmoniously elegant."
