A Shaker pine schoolhouse cupboard built in Mount Lebanon, New York in around 1840 is to lead a sale of furniture produced by members of the US branch of the sect.
The auction will take place at Skinner in Boston on June 15.

The lot, which is valued at $60,000-80,000, is thought to have been built for a local school and displays the minimalist flair that characterises the best examples of Shaker furniture.
Scholar John Kassay wrote in his 1980 study: "The arrangement of the graduated drawers and panelled doors on this exceptionally tall cupboard-chest is harmoniously elegant."
