02: Napoleon signed letter

In stock

Estimate: £2,500 - £3,500

A double-sided letter dictated by Napoleon on military strategy, dated 28 August 1811.

Signed wonderfully at the close in Napoleon’s hand: “Nap”.

Napoleon writes from Trianon (his palace near Versailles) to the Duke of Feltre, who was the Minister of War at the time.

Napoleon discusses military strategies for the island of Goree, close to Dakar, Senegal.

In part: “I approve the project of the engineering committee for the pentagonal fort on the island of Goree. This fort will bear the name of Tromp. I grant the 100,000 francs requested for this year. This fort renders useless all the gun emplacements of Goedereskdlep. As for Springersdiep, I wish to know how big it is: can vessels of war enter it - in which case would a battery be useful there? A mobile long-range battery of cannons and of guns of 12… would that not adequately fulfil the objective? The Goedereskdlep is the main passage that could be followed by enemy men of war, therefore my ships might need protection: the Tromp fort will perfectly fulfil this need.”

Napoleon’s signature is large and expressive. One of the finest you’ll see.

 8.75 x 7.25 inches.

In very good condition.
