Ceylon 1863-66 2d emerald, watermark CC (type 5) REVERSED, SG50e.
A marvellous mint BLOCK OF TWELVE (4x3) with fine colour and large part original gum (six of the stamps are unmounted mint). The top right stamp is defective (and bottom right stamp with trivial thin). The exceptional preservation despite these condition defects means it remains of lovely appearance and is a great Ceylon rarity.
Provenance: Ex Lord Steinberg (Sotheby 6/9/2011, lot 629), Joseph Hackmey I (Spink Shreve 18/2/2009, lot 217 - realised $11,500) and Sir Ernest de Silva. (Harmer 12/1/59, lot 244).
A major philatelic item which has graced some of the most famous philatelic collections and the only mint block of twelve we are aware of.
