Description

An airmail cover, flown and signed by the pioneering aviator Charles Lindbergh (1902 – 1974).

In 1927 Lindberg was catapulted to international fame when he completed the world's first trans-atlantic non-stop solo flight in his plane the Spirit of St Louis.

Prior to that record-breaking flight, Lindbergh had worked as an airmail pilot flying a route between St. Louis and Chicago.

When he returned to the U.S, the Post Office asked him to return to his old route as a promotional event in February 1928.

He flew the route for two days, on February 20 and 21, and every item of mail he carried was given a stamped horseshoe cachet proclaiming “Lindbergh Again Flies The Air Mail”.

Today these covers are popular with collectors, and signed examples such as this are rare.

The envelope measures 6.5” by 3.75” and is addressed in type to “John H. Ruckel,” in Springfield, Illinois.

The front is postmarked Chicago, Illinois, February 21, 1928, and the reverse is postmarked Springfield, Illinois, February 21, 1928, along with an “Air-mail Saves Time,” cancellation.

Lindbergh has signed the envelope vertically along the left edge in black ink.

In fine condition, with scattered light soiling and toning.

A rare and highly collectible flown airmail signature from one of history's greatest aviators.

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA and John Reznikoff.
