    1921-32 Script watermark 100r grey-black, variety 'Break in lines below left scroll' (R4/9).

    Well-centred with lovely fresh colour, original gum, the odd shortish perforation, still very fine, and a particularly prominent example of this variety.

    Very rare. Accompanied by a Sismondo Certificate of Authenticity (2011) incorrectly describes the shade as 'brownish grey', but gives the correct SG number.

    An ex Stanley Gibbons stock item with a Catalogue value of £5,000.

    Cyprus 1880 (1 Apr) ½d rose, type 1 overprint on GB, plate 19, lettered "JE" , fresh colour with above average centring, excellent perfs and full original gum (with just a trace of hingeing).
    Minor toning but an attractive and desirable example of this key rarity, much above average, with impressive provenance and associations, being the right stamp of the horizontal pair formerly in the Richardson collection (RL 6/7/1960, lot 157), which was once attached to the block of 4 in the Royal Collection.     For Sale: £3,750

     

    1925 (24 Aug to 2 Sep) duty die proofs for the new 1½pi and 2½pi plates (each with HORIZONTAL fraction bar), the unique and remarkably full documentation comprising three proofs of each value in different forms.

    The first pair are cut down (27-28 x 33-5mm) and affixed to separate cards (70 x 85mm) with matching M/S endorsements ('Cyprus Req 3947/1' at upper right, dated '28.8.25' at lower right, with 'appd/J Stanford/26/8' above).

    The second pair are stamp-size, and affixed to day book piece with M/S endorsements 'Aug 31st/120' and 'Sep 2nd/120' above, indicating date of striking the 120 leads for each plate. The third pair are matching 92x60mm cards, with 'AFTER/STRIKING' handstamped at lower right.

    An extraordinary assembly which could not be replicated, the first pair of a character not otherwise recorded for Cyprus, the day book piece ex RL Zurich 23/3/76, lot 209 (part).

    1840 2d Mulready Envelope (Forme 1, Stereo a202).

    Very fine used example uprated to the 6d per 3oz rate with four additional 1d blacks from plate 8 lettered QA, SE, SG & SJ (SE & SG State 2 provisional printing) all neatly cancelled by crisp black Maltese Crosses.

    Sent from London to Dulwich with a "T.P./Cheif Office" handstamp and circulare date stamp on reverse for AU.19.1841.

    Some soiling nevertheless a spectacular uprated franking, one of only two recorded 6d frankings prepaid with four additional 1d blacks.

    Ex Yates & "Mayflower" Collections. Accompanied by a 1996 British Philatelic Association Certificate of Authenticity.

    One of the great rarities of Great Britain Philately.
