- A rare, original custom-made 1970s Playboy Bunny outfit
- Owned and worn by Playboy Bunny Charlene Lydon, who worked in the casino at the Playboy Club in Park Lane, Mayfair, London
- Comes with two original bunny tails, bunny ears, two name tag rosettes, Playboy club card, croupier training folder with documents, and Charlene's handmade notes
From the early 1960s onwards, membership of Hugh Hefner's Playboy Clubs of the world acted as a status symbol for the rich and famous. In the elitist atmosphere of the club rooms, drinks were served and roulette tables spun by specially trained waitresses and croupiers: Playboy Bunnies.
The tuxedo-style dress code of the Playboy Clubs became iconic. Each bunny also wore a name tag, made from a satin rosette, pinned above her right hip bone. The costumes were so important they were even registered in the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
No two costumes were the same and were custom fitted for each woman. Often seamstresses were on duty at the Playboy Clubs in case any repairs or alterations were needed.
The outfit comes to us directly from its original owner, British Playboy Bunny Charlene Lydon. Her letter of authenticity explains:
“I was a croupier at the Playboy Club, Mayfair in the 70s.
"When I first joined the club, we worked in waistcoat and shorts. But they then decided to put all the gaming croupiers in what they called the cocktail costumes.
"The costume was handmade, made to measure for each individual bunny.
"I had two, this black one and a green one.
"Our dress code was very strict, we had to wear two pairs of tights under the garment, firstly nude and then topped with sheer black seamless tights.
"We were sent to Stocks House in Tring [mansion used as a Playboy Bunny training centre] for six weeks' training before we were allowed on the Park Lane gaming tables at The Playboy Club.
"In addition is my original training folder with notes and my Playboy key card.
"We had to return costumes when we left so I returned the waistcoat set and kept the bunny costume."
While Playboy Enterprises required all of its employees to turn in their uniforms at the end of their employment, not all did. A handful were kept privately. As such, these costumes are increasingly rare on the private market.
